YAVA - Connecting People Through Volunteering

This morning I was on the T when a gentleman came on asking for spare change. He walked up and down the car asking for spare change until a woman came up to him and handed him some. After that, others followed with more money. But as he walked by a college aged girl she reached into her bag and gave him some food. He thanked her and even stopped to chat.

I hate to read too much into this situation, but it seemed almost too representative of how many people deal with the bigger issues in society (throwing money at them). You can try throwing money at something until it disappears... but you're not addressing the underlying issue. This girl went straight for the problem. In a way she was just like a YAVA-er.

YAVAers don't sit on their couch and write checks to charity, they go out and do something! In fact just earlier today six YAVA volunteers went over to Saturday's Bread to help fight hunger first hand. Remember, it can be a food pantry, visiting with the elderly, or even leaf raking, your small contributions add up to a large difference. So check out the calendar and sign up to do something.

Cheers to you!
