YAVA - Connecting People Through Volunteering

Share your business experience with some great kids! 11/29/2007

The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE, pronounced “nifty”) teaches entrepreneurship to young people from low-income communities to enhance their economic productivity by improving their business, academic, and life skills.  The New England Division of NFTE will reach over 1,400 youth this year through programs in high schools and community based organizations.

NFTE is currently looking for volunteers to serve a variety of roles.  Guest Speakers are needed to speak about entrepreneurship and/or business-related topics.  Business Plan Coaches are needed to work one-on-one with students while they are writing their business plans.  Alumni Business Mentors are needed to work with alumni of NFTE who are interested in starting or growing their business.

For more information, please contact Laura Scarlett at 781-239-5863 or laura.scarlett@nfte.com.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response to our December 16th volunteering event at WGBH, YAVA has asked WGBH to give us more volunteer spots.  If you tried to sign up for the event and it was full, check the calendar, there is now a space for you.  We will keep asking for more volunteer slots as they get filled, so keep signing up and get your friends to help too.  Great job everyone!

A nice reminder of why I volunteer... 11/10/2007

This morning I was on the T when a gentleman came on asking for spare change. He walked up and down the car asking for spare change until a woman came up to him and handed him some. After that, others followed with more money. But as he walked by a college aged girl she reached into her bag and gave him some food. He thanked her and even stopped to chat.

I hate to read too much into this situation, but it seemed almost too representative of how many people deal with the bigger issues in society (throwing money at them). You can try throwing money at something until it disappears... but you're not addressing the underlying issue. This girl went straight for the problem. In a way she was just like a YAVA-er.

YAVAers don't sit on their couch and write checks to charity, they go out and do something! In fact just earlier today six YAVA volunteers went over to Saturday's Bread to help fight hunger first hand. Remember, it can be a food pantry, visiting with the elderly, or even leaf raking, your small contributions add up to a large difference. So check out the calendar and sign up to do something.

Cheers to you!

Sam

Do you want to be on CBS tomorrow !?!? 11/08/2007

What: CBS Early Show!
When: Tomorrow morning, November 9th, 6:30am
Where: Boston Children's Museum, 300 Congress Street, Fort Point across from South Station
How: South Station on the Red Line, Silver Line and Commuter Rail.
Why: Represent your city and ONEin3 and get on national TV!
RSVP: Drop us a line here at ONEin3 at ONEin3Boston@CityofBoston.gov if you can make it.

CBS’s Early Show is filming in Boston on Friday. They need about 200 young people to fill out the crowd. Tell all your friends about it so we can get them a solid group. This is a HUGE opportunity for our friends at ONEin3 because they’re going to get some national coverage, and the local affiliate will be there so they should get some serious local coverage as well.
